Paralegal Certification

The biggest irony about all the paralegal jobs we have on the market today is that there is still no specific paralegal certification regulating this profession. And while we could debate about the fact that the only law that has been passed about this profession is one that prohibits them from giving any legal advice and thus safe guards the attorney’s incomes, the fact is that creating a certification would be a first step towards obtaining more legal authority so it is not something that will be put into work very soon. However there are several schools that have the American Bar Association in the sense that young people graduating have a paralegal certification that they can be helpful in an attorney’s office.

So what is it that you can expect to expect from an ABA approved paralegal certification? Well, ABA has stated that they only give their approvals to schools that assist students in acquiring several essential related competencies. So after graduation from one of these schools you can expect to have passed classes in critical thinking like analysis, judgment, research and problem-solving. Furthermore you can expect to have superior communication skills, computer skills and organizational skills. And another very important aspect that these schools train their students in is a good understanding of ethics both from a moral point of view and as an ability to debate law and help the lawyer come up with fresh perspectives on the case that he or she is working on. So the paralegal certification obtained at these schools does have certain advantages for their students.

And still these paralegal certifications have no real value in establishing a role for the paralegal and if you are only looking to pick up the skills required for the profession and maybe have some form of certification to aid you in your hiring process than you might be interested in getting one of the other programs that might not have the ABA approval but they do have the approval of the American Association for Paralegal Education. And the advantage with these classes is that they cost less and some of them even last less. So you could actually go through a home study an online program or get an associate degree from a two year community and junior college. And for those who really want to take their training seriously there are also some fascinating four-year college and university programs offering degrees in paralegal studies that is probably the closest match for a paralegal certification.

But the fact is that the best paralegal certification you could get is from one of the attorney offices that are willing to do on the job trainings for their employees. There are in fact several lawyers that are aware that the best help they can get is from people they have formed themselves. Of course the problem there will be to convince that attorney that you already have the stuff that he needs and all he needs to do is teach and form you in the shape he needs. But once you have obtained such a paralegal certification you are sure the gain entrance to many other offices so it might be the best path to follow.
